In 1958, the American Memorial Chapel at St Paul’s was dedicated to the American troops who gave their lives to fight against tyranny during World War II.
It stands as a testament to the unbreakable bond between two nations, forged in the fires of war but never forgotten in times of peace. It stands as a reminder that when faced with evil, we must always band together to fight for good.
During the Chapel’s construction, the St Paul’s Choristers performed a series of 41 concerts across the United States to further express their gratitude for the American troops who came to Britain’s aid during World War II.

St Paul’s Cathedral was nearly destroyed by The Blitz—a German bombing offensive that lasted from September, 1940, to May, 1941. The British press coined the term “The Blitz” after the German word for “lightning.” Hitler consistently made the mistake of underestimating the grit and courage of the British people during the war. They were never cowed into submission, even by 57 consecutive nights of bombing. They stood their ground, and they fought.
The Roll of Honour rests in a glass display case at at the base of the High Altar as an integral part of the American Memorial Chapel. The 500-page leather-bound book is a tribute to the 28,000 Americans—from Aaberg to Zingale—stationed in the U.K. who gave their lives fighting against tyranny during WWII. The frontispiece of The Roll of Honour depicts a rainbow connecting the U.S. Capitol and St Paul’s Cathedral, symbolising the unbreakable bond between two nations.

Now, on the Chapel’s 60th Anniversary, the Choristers are returning to the U.S. to honor those who fell fighting for our freedom. St Paul’s hopes to keep this tradition alive for generations to come.
